Estimating nutrients recycling by tropical oceanic macroplankton-micronekton from biomass data
نویسنده
چکیده
Simultaneous measurements of biomass and excretion of macroplankton-micronekton lead to similar results in tropical Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Ratios are thus proposed to roughly estimate regenerated production in oligotrophic tropical waters from biomass data: biomass figures (mg dry wt m-') should be multiplied by 0.32 to estimate the amount of total nitrogen excreted (p,g at m-' day-') and by 0.027 to estimate the amount of total phosphorus excreted (pg atm-' day-').

Micronekton abundance and biomass in Hawaiian waters as influenced by seamounts, eddies, and the moon
Micronekton abundance, biomass, and community composition was determined from 58 Cobb trawl samples taken from 2005 to 2008 at several locations in the lee of the Hawaiian Islands. The results indicated a strong influence of the lunar illumination on micronekton abundance and biomass. This effect was evident in shallow night tows and probably was the result of lunar light affecting the nighttim...
متن کاملRegulation of algal structure and function by nutrients and grazing in a boreal wetland
We evaluated the potential for grazers to regulate benthic algal biomass and taxonomic composition in an Alaskan marsh after enrichment with nutrients that are expected to increase in the region with ongoing climate change. We nested caged and uncaged substrates together inside mesocosm enclosures with natural abundances of snails or no snails and with or without nutrient enrichment (NO3 + PO4 ...
متن کاملMetabolic Potential of Deep-sea Animals: Regional and Global Scales
A significant C flux into the deep-sea which is not accounted for by sedimentary flux results from the vertical transport of organic C in the bodies of zooplankton and micronekton. The energy metabolism of these animals results in the production of CO2 in these deeper waters and is a flux which is currently estimated from the differences in sedimentation at different depths. We evaluate the pos...
متن کاملEnvironmental effects on forage and longline fishery performance for albacore (Thunnus alalunga) in the American Samoa Exclusive Economic Zone
The South Equatorial Counter Current (SECC) strongly influences the American Samoa Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and changes strength on a seasonal and ENSO cycle. A strong SECC is associated with a predominantly anticyclonic eddy field as well as increased micronekton biomass and catchper-unit-effort (CPUE) for albacore tuna, the economically important target species of the local longline fish...
متن کاملA rising tide lifts all phytoplankton: Growth response of other phytoplankton taxa in diatom-dominated blooms
[1] Oceanic phytoplankton assemblages composed predominantly of picophytoplankton respond to the onset of favorable growth conditions with diatom-dominated blooms, the formation of which involves characteristic growth and accumulation responses by both diatoms and the ambient nondiatom community. Contrary to conventional wisdom, both groups of phytoplankton increase in growth rates and absolute...
